Silverstone - Penultimate Round!.....................................................Back To Reports and News
28th September 2009
The penultimate round of the British National Super Stock 1000cc Championship took place at Silverstone last weekend, with the title already decided, Champion Alistair Seeley had moved to the Superbike Class.
However his departure from the class was not noticed as the biggest entry of the year attempted to qualify throughout the weekend for the 40 places available on the grid for Sundays race.
Alex again struggled in Free Practice, the teenager had never seen the circuit since last year when he finished 6th in the 600cc Super Stock race and never been round the circuit on the big Astro Kawasaki. He did however put in a very respectable 1:34.102 giving him the 28th fastest time of the session.
Qualifying 1 seen the youngster put what he had learned from FP to good use and with the adjustments made to the bike, he brought his time down to a 1:30.812 giving him provisional 17th place on the grid.
What was more impressive was the fact that he had put in very fast sector times, as the track was busy it stopped Alex getting a clear run at a fast lap but when the ideal was worked out it gave him a 1: 29.935 which would have been good enough to move him up to 7th position.
Q2 and it was Alex’ goal to get a clear lap, put those sector times together and move up the grid for Sundays race, the Carluke youngster was complaining about the power of his engine and could not go as fast on the straights resulting in him setting a time of 1:30.504 slightly faster than previously but still only good enough for a fifth row start in the race.
Sundays morning warm up set the scene for the rest of the day with Gault retiring after only 5 laps pulling to the side of the track as his engine had stopped. On closer inspection it was found to be a problem with the onboard fuelling computer, having dumped it’s memory.
Thanks to Dynojet who are at every round the computers memory was reinstalled and everything looked good for the race.
Scheduled for last race of the day and starting at 5 to 6 in the evening, light had began to fade, but this did not stop the fantastic spectacle at the front where Adam Jenkinson, Steve Brogan and John McGuiness were looked in a race long battle with Jenkinson taking the win after McGuiness crashed out.
In comparison Alex had a disappointing race, after only one lap it was obvious there was something wrong, Large Bangs and flames from the exhaust as he entered every corner resulted in him retiring from the race on lap 10.
He said “It is very disappointing; I was looking forward to this round. It is a track I tend to go well at but with the problems throughout the weekend, I though it better to retire than risk damaging the engine even more”.
The result drops Alex to 13th place in the championship with the last round to be held at Oulton Park in Cheshire on the 11th of October.
