Donington - Alex Scores First Points in Championship........................................Back To Reports and News

26th May 2009

Alex had another great weekend at round three of the British National Super Stock 1000 Championship when the British Super Bike series visited Donington Park.

The event had been in danger of being re-sited after safety fears, as work continues at the venue in preparation to host the British round of the Formula 1 World Championships from 2010.

However one week before the event was due to take place, the circuit passed an inspection by the MCRCB and the round went ahead as planned.

As far as Alex was concerned the fight goes on to familiarise himself with the traits of the 180 horse power  ASTRO Kawasaki ZX10R.

Boosted by his success at Aintree a few weeks ago the Scottish youngster put up a good account of himself in what is becoming the fiercest fought battle in the series.

In ‘Free Practice’ Alex posted the 17th fastest time with a 1:38.936. Then moving up to provisional 13th slot in ‘Qualy 1’ with a time of 1:37.28 and although everything looked set to progress in ‘Q2’ a technical problem stopped him improving his time and resulted in him slipping down the order to 18th for the start of the Bank holiday Mondays race.

He was back up there however in ‘morning warm up’, with the problem solved from Q2.

Alex gave us a glimpse of what was to come, improving on his time and setting the 11th fastest with a 1:37.1 only 1 place behind Ex Super Bike rider Scott Smart on the official Ducati entry and two places behind James Hillier on the Official Kawasaki entry for the Championship.

The weekend up till now had been bathed in glorious sunshine but for the race the skies were overcast although still very warm.

As the team lined up on the grid they were very hopeful that Alex would score his first championship point (a massive mile stone in any racers career)

To do this he would have to finish in the top 15 from the 42 starters.

The start lights went out and the race was on.

Alex got a fantastic start on completing the first lap he had moved up to 12th place and although dropping back to 14th at one point he crossed the finish line in a well deserved 11th place and giving him 5 championship points.

Alex commented after the race,

“It has been a fantastic weekend apart from the little ‘hick-up in Q2.  I’m very happy I did a 1:36.230 lap in the race a Personal best and to take almost 3 seconds of my times over the weekend is good going. I’d like to thank my sponsors for their help and my mechanics for the work they done over the weekend”.

Up front, the championship continues to be dominated by Irelands Alastair Seeley on the Relentless Suzuki by TAS, who is in a class of his own at the moment setting set pole positions and winning every round so far.
