Cadwell Park -.Alex In The Points For 5th Consecutive Race!...... ...Back To Reports and News

30th August 2009

Click To ViewThe British Super Bike Championship visited the Lincolnshire track of Caldwell Park at the weekend.

This was our first race at the circuit since 2005 and expectations were not high as the circuit which among other considerations is very technical.

This was evident in Free Practice when Alex could only post a time of 1.36:516, 4 seconds slower than the leader Alistair Seeley who set the pace all weekend and has been untouchable all season winning every race for the Irish based ‘Relentless’ team.

Seeley only had to win at this round to seal the championship and secure his place on a Super Bike next season!

Bad luck in First Qualifying stopped Alex improving, when he returned to the pits after only 5 laps with a front wheel puncture, this was disaster as it was track time he need not having to call a halt so early into a session.

This resulted in us finishing outside the qualifying minima for the Bank holiday race and unless we could improve in the final qualifying session to be held on the Sunday, Alex would not be allowed to start the race. Although the problem with the tyre could not be repaired in pit lane; it was an easy fix when the bike returned to our garage.

Over night rain and a forecast of showers throughout the day kept us in doubt if they would be staying until Monday.

In the lead up until the Stock 1000 second qualifying the rain stayed away and the session started in almost perfect conditions.

Alex put the session to good use recording a time of 1.34:805 almost 2 seconds faster than previously, still no where near Seeley’s time of 1.31:147 but good enough for the youngster to qualify in 25th place for the race.

Taking place under blue skies on the bank holiday and in front one of the biggest crowed of spectators this year (estimated at over 40,000), the Super Stock 1000’s race was programmed as the first of the day and the riders took to the track at 11.40.

Click To ViewIt turned out to be a lonely race for Alex, although improving on his start position from 25th to 17th in the first 5 laps.

The leading pack had got away and with him and having so little track knowledge; he slipped further and further back although maintaining his position

At one point the chasing pack of Jimmy Hill, Michael O’Brian and Sam Owens had closed to within 0.06 seconds of him but Gault responded opening a gap of perhaps 7 or 8 bike lengths and crossed the line in 15th place as a few riders had fallen in front of him.

Notably Alex was the first Kawasaki to cross the finishing line.

Up front Seeley sealed the championship wining the race by 5 second from second place man and TT legend John McGuiness with Adam Jenkinson in third.
