Alex Gault 2004 - Injury Blow For Alex But The Casts Off......................................................................Back To Index

Courtesy of Garry NewshamFollowing on from the last report Alex has suffered an injury blow, with an unannounced visit to Mallory Park, to meet up with one of Alex’s sponsors Jerry Stacey.

The team were under pressure, first off, Alex was the only rider on the older style bike, it was his first time on slick tyres and after the only practice session on a strange track, we took some disinformation and changed the gearing.

What can I say “it’s all about learning at this stage!” And a few lessons were learnt here.

In the first race Alex managed a forth place in class, vastly over shadowed by the regular riders at this track.

In race two we changed back to the original gearing we had picked.

This made a vast difference; at least now the bike looked a similar speed going up the straits. Alex had been trailing a pack of four other 125’s for two laps when youthful exuberance took over, now I didn’t see the move but was told he out braked the four going into the hairpin, then when coming out of the corner slipping the clutch, the back end broke away and threw him off the high side.

Resulting in a broken wrist (not too much damage to the bike though! Only kidding)

This seen Alex out four weeks and missing at least one round of every championship he is contending.

The team had to go to the third round of the JRA championship which gave Alex the opportunity to watch his competition from track side. He was also invited into the commentary box to give his thought on the Junior races. Only one other protagonist could have taken the lead of the championship, but in a bitter blow to him his engine blew-up.

So amazingly Alex is still at the top of the table, albeit by a narrow margin as the rest of the field closes in. He filled in the rest of the month with a television appearance and a few shows.

In other news, we have sold the “Conti” bike, so now it will only be 125 GP bikes he will be racing. Which brings me to my next point, I am quickly learning that the work load and intelligence needed is increasing, if any one thinks they could help the team in any way; I would be very pleased to hear from them, you can contact us through Alex’s web site at www.minimotoracer.com

With the cast removed on the 29th of June it left 5 days to get back into shape for the fourth round of the Junior Racing Association Championship.

After only three laps of practice Alex pulled of the circuit in pain, I pulled him from the open Singles and up to 500cc classes and did not let him go out in the trophy race of the JRA championship.

This meant he would go from the back of the grid for the JRA points race, Five laps and Alex managed to arrive 9th from the 20 starters.

This sees him lose the lead of the championship to Joel Williams but he is still very much in contention for the second half of the season which continues on the weekend of the 31st July / 1st August with rounds 5 and 6.
