Alex Gault 2003 - Mid Season Report ....................................................................................................Back To Index
Mid Season Report
Well that's us half way through the season and it has went unbelievably well for Alex.
Off the track sponsors names and logo's have appeared in countless Web Sites, Newspapers and Magazines.
We have just received a copy tape, of the television program made on him, racing his minimoto's and there is talk of the company doing a follow up on the big bikes.
There was also a company filming him for some University project. So who knows where that will lead? So all in all he does seem to attract attention even when we are not going out of our way to look for it.
MINIMOTO
No Surprises in the minimoto, I always knew he'd be up the front on them, what has surprised me, is how well he has managed with the Super Class Bike, do not be disillusioned. Most adults can't handle the power of these bikes and Alex is still the only junior to successfully race these bikes.
I think my plan has worked, as I said at the start of the season, it was to have Alex riding the bike properly by the end of it, I also, got him on it as I thought it might help him with controlling the power of the big bikes, he said this week end " You know with me riding the super, I don't get a fright when the back end steps out on the Rx, in fact I'm starting to "back it" into the hair pins".
The other important part of his training is he is also racing a classic minimoto, which he maintains and does all the mechanical work on. This will also help him in the future. In turn helping me, as I will only have to point to things, and they will get fixed (LOL)
In the British Championships he is sitting second in Junior Supers and leading the "Paul Godard" Classic class.
BIG BIKE
The big surprise for me is how well he has gone on the Motorhispania. At the start of the season I said I would be happy if he could be "out riding" the bike by the end of the year, and it would be great to have a finish in the first three of the JRA Championship (Thinking, he might make third). Although there is still along way to go, He "is on it" as they say, and challenging for the front slots every time out.
His bike has been heavily modified to compete with the Cagiva's normally used in this class which have been developed over the past 10 years, but thanks to E.P.BARRUS and METRAKIT through BEK Wholesale, we have done it in a matter of months. It might be very slightly down on power (always need more), however Alex has won nine out of his 12 races on it in the formula 80 Class.
In the JRA championship he is sitting second, 4 points behind the leader, if it hadn't have been for him falling off, in the second championship race he would now have been leading it. Still he learned from that, and it shows in his riding, he's won every race since.
THE FUTURE
We are making plans for Alex to be on a 125 GP bike, next year. Until now he has been up to ever challenge I have set him; He wants to be on a GP bike as quickly as possible. With the way he has been going, it is only fair that I give him the chance. There are a lot of hurdles in the way, but the plan is in action, and on course.
The ultimate goal is to contend the 2005 British championships, with 2004 being used as a training year, very estimated costs: another £4,000 for this year. A budget of around £20,000 for 2004, and if that goes well to challenge for the British championship in 2005 don't know, but I have heard figures of around £40K. So looks like I'd better get another job EH! Come to that, another two jobs.
Well that's my plan, however we are open to all suggestions and if you have any ideas of your own for him, please let us know.
Some Other Stuff
With the original web master retiring, we have replaced him with a newer model, the new look web site is up and running. Please visit it and let us know what you think at www.minimotoracer.com
Alex has just picked up another sponsor "Autoworx", of Wishaw. This local company has agreed to help with mechanical repairs to his Transporter for the rest of this season, with the possibility of continued help in 2004.
