Alex Gault 2002 - ACU Pocket Bike Championships - Round one Donington Park.......................Back To Index

With the British round over, the minimoto circus  moved the 150 or so miles up the road to the Donington Park circuit near Derby. To meet up with the other contestants who were already there who had taken advantage of the practice day.

We were greeted by the  news that an unfortunate accident had resulted in Young Luke Mossey having broken his collar bone, this is disastrous news for one of the favourites for this championships, Luke has ran in the shadow of his elder twin  Jamie for the past two years but the smart money this year, was for the youngster to take the number 1 slot.

The Sunday morning weather could not decide what to do, with the organisers deliberating on calling it a wet  race, however by mid day it was dry and the qualifying race got under way.

In this championship Alex can only run in juniors and with the mixed grid assembled they were off.

The 15-lap race around the Melbourne loop  was going to prove testing for Alex broken wrist. (This race brought to mind a medical form we received from Alex school a few years back.

One of the questions in it asked is there anything wrong with his ears? I  jokingly replied only when asked to do some thing!

How right I was!

He had been told this race was not important he only needed to qualify for the next race, that if he got into a dice with any one to pull out and fall  in behind them).

As the flag dropped he zoomed into the lead followed by Chris Jones for all of the fifteen laps they diced to the end.

He did qualify on pole for the first race in this prestigious Championship but I  can assure you, his ears were working when I got him back to the camper!

In the race he fell into second spot, Chris out front with Alex Heaton a similar distance behind Alex.

If under these conditions a race could  have been easy on dads nerves this was it, a great result as far as I was concerned no accidents involving Alex and second place, Alex was very depressed after the accident in Italy.

This weekend resulted in a far  different picture than the one envisaged 12 days ago. Sitting in second place in both championships.
